Stephen Hawking was the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and author of the international bestseller A Brief History of Time. He was Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge, and wrote other books for the general reader, including: A Briefer History of Time, the essay collection Black Holes and Baby Universe and The Universe in a Nutshell, as well as a popular series of children's adventure stories co-authored with his daughter, Lucy Hawking.

In 1963, Hawking contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live. Despite this prognosis, he went on to Cambridge to become a brilliant researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. From 1979 to 2009 he held the post of Lucasian Professor at Cambridge, the chair held by Isaac Newton in 1663. Professor Hawking was awarded over a dozen honorary degrees, and a CBE in 1982. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Science. Stephen Hawking was regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein.

In spite of being wheelchair-bound and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication, Stephen Hawking continued combined family life (he had three children and three grandchildren), and research into theoretical physics, together with an extensive programme of travel and public lectures. He died in March 2018.

Author's Comment: It surprises me how disinterested we are today about things like physics, space, the universe and philosophy of our existence, our purpose, our final destination. Its a crazy world out there. Be curious.
