Marjorie Weinman Sharmat was born in Portland, Maine, in 1928. During her lifetime she wrote more the 130 books for children and teens, some of which won awards such as the Library of Congress' Book of the Year. Her most popular work features the child detective, Nate the Great, a character inspired by and named after her father. The first book was published in 1972.
 
Marjorie's husband, Mitchell Sharmat, later expanded Nate's storyline by creating Olivia Sharp, his cousin and fellow detective. Husband and wife wrote four Olivia Sharp books published 1989 to 1991. Later books in the Nate the Great series were co-written with her sons, Craig and Andrew. Marjorie passed away in 2019 at the age of 90.
