Dicey began to panic. The four of them had been waiting in the car for hours now. Why wasn't their mother back? Why had she just walked off like that? What would they do if she never came back? Dicey had known for a while that something was not right with her mother. There wasn't anything she could put her finger on, but when Mamma said goodbye to them that day in the supermarket car park, Dicey knew that she wasn't coming back.

And so Dicey, just thirteen years old but as resourceful as they come, begins to lead her young siblings halfway across America to their only known relative—on foot. This is a story of four children's courage against impossible odds and of their relentless determination to find their place in the world.

'Homecoming' is the first book I ever read in which I really identified with the characters on a personal level. My childhood experiences were nothing like Dicey and her family's but the author writes her situation so authentically that you feel like a part of her close-knit family. A wonderful introduction to a remarkable series.
